The Devil and The Hermit.

Posted on 16 June, 2017 at 3:45

The final cards of the week from the Bonefire Tarot are both from the Major Arcana; namely the Devil and the Hermit. These can seem to be an unusual pairing at first glance, but then looking again it begins to make sense as we move away from our “Devilish” behaviour and towards the solitude of the Hermit.

The Devil is about the addictions we feed, habits that do us more harm than good and excesses in our lives. The Devil encourages us to have fun, no harm in that, but then he dares us to take it a step further; that extra drink, one more cake, staying out that bit later- again not much in themselves- but then next time it's another on top of the ones we've already had as extra, until there are more days when we're feeding our destructive habits than those when we're not. He can trick us to make us think we're in control, but are we really? This can cover far more than the examples I've given; I'm sure many of us can think of several things that have grown in our lives more than we realised they had, or habits we thought were under control but come back to haunt us every so often. What can we do about this? This leads nicely onto the the next card, The Hermit.

The Hermit is a solitary figure; he's pictured here with his eyes closed and holding a lamp that surrounds everything immediately around him, but not much further afield. This card encourages us to have some time alone and consider our lives and where they're heading. The lamp the Hermit is holding tells us to look at our lives, even the parts we try and hide away in the darkness, and evaluate what we're doing. We could do with turning inwards for a little while, closing our eyes, meditating, thinking about where we are, what we want and what we can do to get us back on track to encourage these things to come into our lives. This can help us to see more clearly what's good and bad for us, what situations and maybe even people we need to limit or remove from our lives in order for us to become the people we want to be, and not chained to the debauchery of the Devil. It's time to find ourselves again, and be happy in our our skins.
